At The Barn Butchery & Farm Shop in Denham, we do things the proper way. Founded by award winning butcher Gareth Doherty in 2020, we specialise in high welfare, locally sourced meats, fresh seasonal produce, and old-school service - reimagined for the modern Suffolk kitchen. Backed by more than three decades of hands on butchery experience, we’re proud to offer the kind of quality and expertise that supermarkets simply can’t match.

The Barn Butchery is built on more than skill, it's built on family. Gareth runs the shop alongside his father, Alan Doherty, who brings a steady hand, decades of practical experience, and the kind of work ethic that only comes from a lifetime of graft. Together, they form a tight-knit team grounded in shared values: quality, integrity, and community.

For the Dohertys, this isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life, and every customer who walks through the door is treated like part of the family.

Our Awards

In 2022, the shop was named Best Farm Shop in the East of England at the Prestige Awards.

And in 2025, it became a regional finalist in the Muddy Stilettos Awards, thanks to overwhelming support from loyal local customers.

Meet Gareth Doherty, Founder & Master Butcher

With over 30 years in the trade, Gareth Doherty is one of Suffolk’s most experienced and respected butchers. His journey began with a Saturday job at just 15 years old, followed by a formal apprenticeship and full qualification in 1996. Since then, he’s dedicated his life to mastering traditional British butchery, refining his skills across some of the region’s best known shops and always championing high-welfare, locally sourced meat.

Before founding The Barn Butchery in 2020, Gareth co-ran the award winning Lavenham Butchers, which was crowned Best Butcher in East Anglia by the Countryside Alliance. He also helped revitalise the E&G Farm Shop on the Denham Estate, supplying Suffolk raised venison and farm fresh produce to the local community.

In 2022, Gareth’s dedication was recognised once again when The Barn Butchery was named Best Farm Shop in the East of England at the Prestige Awards.

Whether he’s preparing a dry-aged rib of beef, advising on the best joint for your Sunday roast, or greeting regulars by name, Gareth’s passion for proper butchery, local food, and honest service continues to shape every aspect of the shop.
